Rounds and Strainers

One of the most crucial elements to the success of Goldpine is the constant research and development undertaken to improve products and fencing solutions. Goldpine works in partnerships with independent organisations, such as Scion, formerly the NZ Forest Research Institute, to introduce innovation and technology to add value for our customers.

Goldpine High Density Posts

Goldpine sources most of its raw log supply from Nelson's high density pine forests, one of only two high density forest regions in New Zealand. High density equals high strength in timber, meaning Goldpine can be confident in the strength of all their posts and poles.

Strong and durable - Mature Trees

As well as sourcing our logs from high density regions we source mature trees. Trees at maturity means they have grown to their potential and are as strong as we need. It also means that the tree has sequestered as much carbon as it can. Harvesting mature trees and replanting sustainably results in an extremely efficient carbon pump.

"The range of fence posts at Goldpine is second to none. Having such range and choice at Goldpine ensures you get the best value for your money."

Use wood wherever possible

Rising levels of CO2 are recognised as being associated with global warming and will result in serious environmental consequences if steps are not taken to reduce emissions. Increasing levels of CO2 are a result of burning fossil fuels and tropical rainforest deforestation, whereas new forest growth from both indigenous and plantation forestry can actually remove carbon from the air.

Plantation Pinus Radiata forests in New Zealand are extremely beneficial in combatting the ever-growing emissions around the world. In the lifecycle, a seedling is planted and grows into a tree by sequestering carbon. Once that tree hits maturity and therefore reduces the amount it sequesters, the best result is that the tree is harvested and a new seedling is planted in its place. When harvesting a tree, we need to make use of the carbon store by creating a Harvested Wood Product (HWP), and the longer lasting… the better. It just so happens that a treated fence post has one of the longest lifespans of any HWP.

The world's climate has always changed and human activities have triggered an unusually rapid and severe warming with associated effects such as massive droughts, floods and sea-level rises.

Using timber from certified renewable plantation forests can help to combat these effects. We are extremely proud of our products and, much like the United Nations and the New Zealand Government, we strongly encourage the increased use of wood throughout New Zealand. Use wood wherever possible.

There's strength in nature

Something we have become very proud of is our own natural product. The fact that it's natural, benefits the world in so many ways and we keep our processing to a minimum to enhance this. First and foremost our product directly positively effects the negative factors in climate change, sequestering carbon and locking it away for a prolonged period.

The second key benefit our product has is its strength and durability. Being a natural product we expect their will be some nature variation and that's what we plan for. At the very minimum, our product will do the job intended, but natural variation and high density logs mean that our product will go well beyond.

It's natural. It's strong. And it’s durable.

High Density means high strength

Goldpine sources logs from Nelson's high density pine forests, one of only two high density forest regions in New Zealand. Both Scion (formerly the New Zealand Forestry Research Institute) and The Ministry of Primary Industries have independently verified that high density means high strength. Using logs from high density, mature trees is why a Goldpine post is not the same as other posts, it's stronger and that's why products like the Superpost® have a unique "you break 'em and we replace 'em guarantee".

The density comes from the growing conditions that we have in the Nelson region. The climate and slow growing nature means that there's more carbon per square inch. You'll see our growth rings are tightly compact, a visual indication of the density.

More carbon locked away, providing high density roundwood and a stronger fence post for you.

Be Aware of Thinnings

What are thinnings and why they are significant?

Fence posts made from thinnings will not last the distance. Make sure you are buying mature high density wood. Below is a description of the signs to look out for:

Section 1: Cross section of a thinning post

Note the fewer growth rings and the wide spaces between each ring. This is an immature and weak log.

Section 2: Cross section of a mature post

This is cut from a 28+ year old tree and has over 20 tightly packed growth rings. This is a mature and strong tree.

At Goldpine, we have built our reputation on quality product, therefore all Goldpine posts are sourced from mature trees in high density forests.

Treatment Guarantee

The basic process of treating Goldpine posts and poles is simple, highly controlled and constantly monitored. Radiata Pine, which has been peeled and steamed, is loaded onto bogies and pushed into a large horizontal treating cylinder. The cylinder door is hermetically sealed and a strong vacuum removes the majority of air from the cylinder and from the cells of the wood.

CCA oxide is pumped into the cylinder and pressure is raised to about 1400 kPa. This forces the preservative deep into the wood cells. The CCA oxide reacts with the wood sugars to form insoluble precipitates. When the entire sapwood volume has been penetrated with CCA oxide to its intended retention level (eg H5) the treatment process is complete. Excess treatment solution is pumped out of the cylinder and into a storage tank to be reused.

Pressure is returned to normal before the door is opened and the bogies are pulled out. The wet posts and poles are stacked under cover on a concrete floor for at least a week to ensure wood is dripfree and the chemical is completely fixed. The end result of this process is a product which will retain its structural integrity 10-20 times longer than untreated wood.

This earns the posts and poles a 50 year guarantee against fungal or insect attack.
